Mercuric chloride

Mercuric chloride (HgCl₂) is a white crystalline substance odorless, highly soluble in water and alcohol. Previously used in medicine as an antiseptic and disinfectant ('sulema water'), and as a biological tissue fixative. Currently prohibited for medical and household use due to high toxicity. Used only in analytical chemistry and laboratory research. One of the most poisonous mercury salts.

Mechanism of action Strong cellular poison, damages mucous membranes, kidneys, liver, and nervous system. Has cumulative effect: accumulates in tissues with repeated doses, especially in kidneys and brain.
Lethal dose Oral: 0.3-0.5 g - lethal dose for adult; 0.1-0.2 g causes severe poisoning; skin contact: 1-2 g with prolonged exposure

Poisoning symptoms • Severe burning in mouth, throat, and abdomen • Vomiting blood, metallic taste in mouth • Painful diarrhea, dehydration • Acute abdominal pain, convulsions • Swelling of mucous membranes, difficulty breathing • Later - oliguria, anuria, uremia (acute renal failure) • Chronic exposure - tremor, irritability, memory loss, psychosis
Toxicity One of the most poisonous mercury salts. Dangerous when ingested, vapors inhaled, or upon skin contact.
Shelf life and storage conditions Store in tightly sealed gripper. Avoid contact with organic substances and metals. Shelf life - no more than 3 years.
