Botulinum toxin

Botulinum toxin A (C₆₇₆₀H₁₀₄₄₇N₁₇₄₃O₂₀₁₀S₃₂) is a protein neurotoxin produced by the anaerobic bacterium Clostridium botulinum. The most potent known biological poison. Blocks transmission of nerve impulses to muscles, causing paralysis. In microdoses, used in medicine and cosmetology under names like "Botox," "Dysport" — for relieving spasms, treating hyperhidrosis, and smoothing wrinkles. In large doses, causes the deadly disease botulism.

Toxicity Most potent known biological poison. 10 million times more toxic than cyanide. Remains active at low temperatures, destroyed by boiling (100°C, 10-15 min). Especially dangerous when inhaled or ingested.
Mechanism of action Inhibits acetylcholine release at synapses, blocks transmission of nerve impulses to muscles, causing paralysis. Lethal dose for humans is less than 1 nanogram per kilogram of body weight when administered intravenously.
Lethal dose Orally: about 1 mcg/kg; 0.07 mg is sufficient for lethal outcome in adult human
Time to death Symptoms: 12-36 hours (sometimes up to 5 days) after toxin exposure; fatal outcome in severe cases: 24-72 hours
Poisoning symptoms • Dry mouth, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness • Dilated pupils, double vision, ptosis (drooping eyelids) • Weakness, impaired speech and coordination • Drop in blood pressure, bradycardia • Difficulty breathing, respiratory arrest • Absence of convulsions, complete muscle flaccidity • Consciousness remains clear until asphyxia occurs
