Cyanide (glass capsule)

Liquid cyanide in glass ampoule

HIMTRADE
Cyanide (glass capsule)

Aqueous solution of potassium cyanide (KCN) — colorless crystals dissolved in water, forming liquid potassium cyanide. Used in electroplating (gilding, silvering), gold mining, organic synthesis, and laboratory processes. It is an extremely potent poison with instantaneous action, similar in toxicity to hydrocyanic acid (HCN). Primary mechanism of action is blockade of cytochrome oxidase enzyme in mitochondria.

Lethal dose 0.05 g (50 mg) pure substance; 5 ml of 1% solution
Time to death Instant upon ingestion
Mechanism of action Blocks cytochrome oxidase enzyme in mitochondria, stopping tissue respiration. Cells stop utilizing oxygen, leading to internal asphyxia.
Poisoning symptoms • Metallic or almond odor from mouth • Burning in throat, sudden weakness, dizziness • Rapid breathing, followed by convulsions and loss of consciousness • Skin - pinkish-red (oxygenated blood) • Dilated pupils non-reactive to light • Coma, respiratory arrest, death
Toxicity Extremely potent poison with instantaneous action, similar in toxicity to hydrocyanic acid (HCN). Acts instantly upon inhalation of vapors or ingestion of solution. Lethally dangerous even upon contact with skin and mucous membranes. Death occurs from respiratory arrest and cardiac muscle paralysis.
Shelf life and storage conditions Store in tightly closed flask, away from moisture. Shelf life - 1 year.
