Curare

Curare is a group of plant poisons containing alkaloids (mainly tubocurarine) obtained from the bark and lianas of South American plants of the genera Chondrodendron and Strychnos. Used by Amazonian Indians for coating arrows and darts. In medicine, tubocurarine was previously used as a muscle relaxant during surgical operations. It is a neurotoxin that blocks nerve impulse transmission to skeletal muscles.

Lethal dose 5-10 mg of pure alkaloid for an adult
Time to death Intramuscular/intravenous: 5-15 minutes; small doses: 30-60 minutes
Mechanism of action Blocks nerve impulse transmission to skeletal muscles as a competitive antagonist of acetylcholine at neuromuscular synapses. Causes paralysis of respiratory muscles while consciousness is preserved.
Poisoning symptoms • General weakness, loss of mobility • Difficulty breathing, sensation of suffocation • Inability to speak, move limbs • Drop in blood pressure, cyanosis of skin • Complete paralysis while conscious • Death from asphyxia and brain hypoxia
Toxicity Acts as a neurotoxin blocking neuromuscular transmission. Does not affect sensitivity or consciousness - person dies fully aware. Toxicity is dramatically reduced when absorbed through skin.
Shelf life and storage conditions Store in airtight glass bottles, protected from light, away from acids and alkalis. Avoid contact with skin and mucous membranes. Shelf life - no more than 12 months.
